Following the recent global recognition of King’s College of the Philippines in the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) 2026, the institution continues to strengthen its reputation as a center for innovation, research, and future-oriented education. This achievement reflects the strong commitment of the school administration, led by School President Ae Jin Kwon, in fostering an academic environment where students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to pursue excellence in research, technology, and community engagement.
Under the leadership and vision of President Ae Jin Kwon, King’s College of the Philippines has continuously supported programs and initiatives that empower students and educators to become active contributors to innovation and nation-building. The institution places strong emphasis on research development, publication, extension services, and global collaboration, ensuring that academic learning extends beyond the classroom into real-world impact. Through the support of the school administration and the Research and Development Office (RDO), students, faculty, and staff are highly encouraged to conduct studies, publish scholarly works, participate in conferences, and develop innovative solutions aligned with the institution’s mission and vision.
One of the institution’s most notable contributors to this international recognition is the College of Information Technology (CIT), which emerged as a key driver behind the university’s success through its innovative programs and research contributions. At the forefront of CIT’s achievements is the SPARK Program (Shaping Professionals through Active Research and Knowledge-sharing), which secured the 62nd place worldwide under the Future-Oriented Responses category.

The SPARK Program was conceptualized and spearheaded by the Dean of the College of Information Technology, Ginard S. Guaki, whose vision centered on cultivating a strong culture of research, collaboration, innovation, and community engagement among students and faculty members. With the vision and support of the administration of King’s College of the Philippines and President Ae Jin Kwon, the SPARK Program evolved into a platform that empowers future IT professionals to become innovators, researchers, and technology-driven leaders.
The SPARK Program officially began on August 23, 2023, in Guinaoang through the College of Information Technology’s adopt-a-school extension initiative in partnership with Guinaoang National High School. The initiative aimed to improve digital connectivity and technological capabilities within the partner school while promoting collaborative learning between institutions. Through the program, CIT conducted network assessments, infrastructure improvements, device configuration and installation, as well as training and knowledge transfer for designated personnel. The partnership was later formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on September 11, 2024, establishing a five-year collaboration focused on achieving technological self-sufficiency for the partner school.
Aligned with the goals of the SPARK Program, the initiative also opened opportunities for CIT students to engage in community-based learning by conducting technology training sessions for faculty members and students of the partner institution. Reflecting the spirit of collaboration behind the initiative, Sir Ginard S. Guaki emphasized, “You learn from us, we learn from you,” highlighting the mutual exchange of knowledge and experiences between both schools.
Like a single spark that ignites a flame, the SPARK Program serves as a starting point for ideas, creativity, research, and innovation within the college. Through guided research, academic partnerships, extension programs, workshops, project development, and real-world problem-solving activities, the program cultivates an environment where learning continuously evolves into meaningful contributions to society.

In addition to its academic initiatives, CIT also contributed to the institution’s global recognition in research. The college’s published work titled “Zero Trust Security in WFA Platforms: A Literature Review of Principles, Challenges, and Best Practices,” authored by Melbert P. Marafo, Brein Palay-en, Jofre Seth Kiniway, Gilbert Dulagan, Frederick Bugalin, John Bacasen, and Ginard S. Guaki, ranked 88th worldwide under the Representative Research Project category. Conducted under the guidance and supervision of Sir Ginard S. Guaki, the study explores emerging approaches to securing Work-From-Anywhere (WFA) environments and emphasizes the importance of adaptive security frameworks in modern digital infrastructures.
These achievements highlight how King’s College of the Philippines, through the leadership of President Ae Jin Kwon, continues to nurture innovation, research excellence, and transformative education. By continuously supporting programs such as SPARK and encouraging active participation in research and publication, the institution empowers students and educators to create meaningful impact in their communities and beyond= proving that with the right support and vision, a single spark can inspire a lasting light of innovation for future generations.
