Courage, Leadership, and Initiative: Rev. Yong Gu Kim’s Lecture

On February 19, 2025, at the Ebenezer Convention Center, Rev. Yong Gu Kim delivered professorial lecture on “Courage, Leadership, and the Power of Initiative”. He drew inspiration from the Hebrew biblical figure “Nachshon”, a tribal leader of the Judahites during the wilderness wanderings in the Book of Numbers.

A Calling to Serve: From Dreams to Divine Purpose

Rev. Kim shared how his journey began with a simple dream—to travel the world on a cruise ship. However, he soon realized that God’s plans were far greater than his own desires. Reflecting on the question, “How do I know if I am being called to serve as a missionary?” he emphasized that God calls individuals to become the people He created them to be and to fulfill the purpose He designed for them. This realization led Rev. Kim to listen closely to God’s calling, which eventually directed him to Israel.

Answering the Call: A Journey of Service and Faith

In Israel, Rev. Kim learned Hebrew, deepened his understanding of Yeshua, and served those in need. During an economic crisis, he volunteered at San Simon, embracing service in line with Matthew 20:28: “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.” His dedication earned him an Israeli government scholarship, leading to 14 years of service. During this time, he provided eyeglasses, checked lenses, and distributed essential goods.

Seeking to expand his mission, he envisioned “one new humanity”—a unity of communities through faith and service. This vision led him to Uganda, where he founded KUTIC (Korean-Ugandan Training and Incubation Center), an organization focused on leadership development and mission work.

Eventually, his journey took him to Qatar. There, he now leads the Qatar Korean Church’s world mission, reaching eight countries and supporting ten missionary families. Believing that God is the master planner, he cites Proverbs 16:9: “In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

A Question In Life

As Rev. Kim concluded his lecture, he posed a question to the audience: “Where is your life headed right now?”. He encouraged everyone to apply these lessons to their own journeys. Reminding them that God is always present, he declared, “He is the way maker; that is who God is.”

Rev. Yong Gu Kim’s journey from Israel to Uganda and Qatar exemplifies courage, leadership, and initiative. His lecture powerfully reminded everyone that trusting in God’s plan allows us to make a lasting impact on the world.
